This systems commissioning course ensures that the fire protection systems (fire alarm, fire suppression, smoke control) meet:
- code requirements
- building/occupancy requirements
- design intent/requirements
- owner expectations
NFPA 3 – Recommended Practice for Commissioning and Integrated Testing of Fire Protection and Life Safety Systems – sets minimum requirements for design and acceptance testing but does not require the execution of commissioning. NFPA 3 defines commissioning as:
“A systematic process that provides documented confirmation that building systems function according to the intended design criteria set forth in the project documents and satisfy the owner’s operational needs, including compliance with applicable laws, regulations, codes, and standards.”
Fire Protection Systems Commissioning is a necessary process where the fire protection systems are:
- reviewed during design for compliance with applicable codes and standards
- tested to ensure adherence to the design documents (plans, specifications, sequences of operation)
- accurately documented in the as-built shop drawings and the O & M (operations and maintenance) manuals
- properly closed out with required licenses and warranties
This course walks you step-by-step through the commissioning process for Fire Protection Systems from initial design document review to development of testing procedures to actual testing and witnessing of systems operations to project close-out. Upon completion of this course, you will be able to carry out the functions and responsibilities of a Fire Commissioning Agent FCxA.
