HVAC Design Fundamentals 1

PDH Credit: 6.0 hours
CEU Credit: 0.6 hours

Topics Covered:

  • HVAC Design Fundamentals
    • Thermodynamic Refrigeration Cycles
      • The second law of thermodynamics states that heat cannot spontaneously flow from a cold system to a hotter system without the input of work. For example, an air conditioning system requires work input (typically in the form of mechanical compression) to cool a space – moving the heat from a space (the heat source) to a warmer location (the heat sink). Sadi Carnot first described the principle of a refrigeration cycle as a heat engine.
    • Fluid Flow
    • Thermal Comfort
    • Indoor Environment
  • Heat Transfer
    • Heat transfer is the exchange of thermal energy between physical systems governed by the First Law of Thermodynamics. The direction of heat transfer is from a region of high temperature to a region of lower temperature, and is governed by the Second Law of Thermodynamics.
    • The three fundamental modes of heat transfer are:
      • Conduction
        • Steady-State Conduction
        • Unsteady-State Conduction
      • Convection
      • Radiation
    • Heat Transfer Through Walls
    • Heat Transfer Through Roofs
    • Heat Transfer Through Glass
    • Heat Transfer Through Floors and Interior Partitions
  • Psychrometrics
    • Psychrometrics is the field of study concerned with the determination of physical and thermodynamic properties of gas-vapor mixtures. The term derives from the Greek psuchron meaning “cold” and metron meaning “means of measurement”
    • Wet-Bulb and Dew Point Temperatures
    • Cooling and Dehumidification
    • Heating and Humidification
    • The Psychrometric Chart and The Air Conditioning Process
